Reviews After going to last year's show at Hammerstein this was a little disappointing. All in all it was a good time, but a lot of my favorite songs were left out. City on Down, Hey Girl, and Black Rock were incredible though. -JKlein30 November 28, 2004
wtf!!!! there was something wrong with the sound all night which really took away from the show. after seeing the setlist for night 2 i feel like i was cheated. not one of the best oar shows i have seen. JBT was awesome -coyn113 November 29, 2004
The sound totally killed this show. You couldn't hear the sax solos and sometimes the vocals were really scratchy - the whole left side speaker rig was rattling... not fun. The encore kicked ass though... couldn't really ask for better songs there. The setlist wasn't too bad, and the new songs were awesome, they just didnt get much reaction. The show was no match at all for Saturdays show which was just incredible. I had tickets for both nights but if i could do it all over again id sell those Friday ones. -bobbo1234 November 29, 2004
destination and to zion goes i in one night?
best night of my life!!!!!! -senoritajessita November 29, 2004
First off, yes the sound was messed up, but the concert still rocked. When he said 3 new songs I was pissed but they turned out to be great. Hey girl into Poker for an end doesnt get much better. Great show overall, they should think about expanding to a 8,000 seat venue instead of a 4,000. -sudzy66 November 29, 2004
the actual music part of the show was great. I think One Shot is gonna be a great song. I kinda felt cheated as Marc didn't really play the crowd like he normally does and talk with the crowd. I haven't heard Get Away in a long time so that was a very nice surprise and of course they played it extremely well. I didn't like JBT but I thought JB's part in About An Hour Ago was awesome. -puesto13 November 29, 2004
although i love these guys, this was not their best show...i was kinda disappointed in the setlist...i think there could have been a better variety..i dug the new songs that were played, Crowded Mind was sick...i dont kno about the sound sucking cause i was right up front against the barricade, but there just seemed to be something missing from the performance as a whole...the energy was not up to par...also i had never heard of jbt but they were amazing...i loved they show they put on, it was great! -msmchick November 29, 2004
Because of 2002, these Hammerstein shows will never again meet the hype that has been created. I didn't really notice the sound problems and thought the band sounded very good. Better than they usually do. I kind of like how he didn't do as much talking and mess around with the words (you know when he is obviously making the words up as he goes along.) I was dissapointed he didn't put the fire tag with destination. Also very strange set list. I think it's obvious after 3 years of this that Friday is always the experimental night and Saturday is always the better night. -Jay15 November 29, 2004
I had a good time...not as good as second night but it was cool to hear songs that I had never heard before...

The new tunes are awesome, and Dakota was good to hear. The highlight for me was About an Hour Ago, which is one of my favorite OAR songs and I had always wanted to hear them play it...

Lots of crowd participation..overall great show -TuesdaysComin November 29, 2004
That show was sick, I'd never heard somoved on live and i was ecstatic when it came on. New songs were good, Toy store was greaat, King of the thing as always a good one, risen too. Black Rock tho, w/ the new lyrics and the red flood lights was INTENSE, that was great. A little too short, about an hour ago was good but not the best of the night, Get away was done very well, good close. and when i heard wonderful day opening i cringed a little, but was loving it a minute later. great show, really great. -WithMyDrinkInHand November 29, 2004
show was sick, didnt get to go to the sat show (next year both shows) but i had a damn good time and they rocked. saw them at the berg a couple weeks before and this show blew that out of the water. sick shit cant wait till next year. lovin the poker intro, wished they played lonely day intro for black rock but watever it still kicked ass, love the harmonizing guys haha cya next year sometime -relax4adelfew November 29, 2004
from where i was the sound was fine. it was an awesome show. i missed JBT but it was awesome when he played about an hour ago. one of the best encores i have ever seen or even heard of them doing in other shows. great time and next year i'm going to both. -Genix November 30, 2004
anyone that says this show was disappointing needs to have their head checked. Debut of 2 new songs, zion which never gets played, get away closer, so moved on, and black rock/blood outro was SIC. I give this show a 8.5 out of 10. -Chris Swanson November 30, 2004
I thought this show kicked ass!!! There was nothing wrong with the sound from where I was standing and the setlist was awesome! I first heard of JBT from Bonnaroo and it was great to finally see them live. The only thing that I found wrong, was all of the drunk teenagers throwing up and making out throughout the whole show. Why would you pay the money to not even watch one song? Next year, please give up your tickets for people who really appreciate and respect the band and their music! Also, take a lesson from the fans of DMB, Phish or even the words of O.A.R. themselves, love and accept eachother and their differences. Band was great but the crowd sucked!

THANK YOU RICHFRY13!!! (see 5 reviews down from this) i'm glad I wasn't the only one effected by the youngsters!!! The other show I was at in New Jersey, I got a whole beer spilled on me by some drunken fool. And I saw 2 fights that night. What is up with this?? Makes me not want to go to any more shows, but that would break my heart! Hopefully things will get better! -lightningbug November 30, 2004
it was a real good show except my favorite song, About Mr. Brown, wasnt played. Ive seen them 4 times and they've NEVER PLAYED IT FOR ME hah...they'll play it one time for me i know...but overall the show was great, baba oreilly was a good intro and JBT was better than i expected -CoronaOAR November 30, 2004
I thought this show was amazing!! It was pretty close to last year's..the new songs were amazing! To Zion goes I=AWESOME! -fabes November 30, 2004
excellent show, i dont know why youd say otherwise, minor sound problem but didnt really take away from the show for me, awesome setlist, somewhat shitty crowd, at least worst toward the front...i had a great time, probably best ive been too. zion, city, wonderful day, getaway, toy store, smo! -kcsublime November 30, 2004
Crowded Mind-O.A.R.
Crowded mind on the street tonight
Head full of eggs but im doing alright
Your upstairs lyin' in our bed
Wonderin' if you will make it
Just a block between the door and me
Walking in will set your mind at ease
But your upstairs lyin' in my bed
Wonderin' if i will make it
There is a crimson rose lyin' in my hand
It's better off there than to understand
If no one sees or lays agianst the wall
I just wanna sing a song to you
Lay it down like I used to do
But your upstairs lyin' in my bed
Wondering if I will make it
I'm just thinkin', please don't fail me
without your love, without your love...
I'm just thinkin', please don't fail me
Without your love, I'm not gonna make it(oh oh oh, oh oh oh)
A long time ago I fall into you (not sure)
When did I tip over
Stumbled up the stairs in twos
I'm gonna make it
The hall always smelled like a child to me
Painted you a picture
And your inside and lyin' in my bed
Wonderin' if I will make it
I'm just thinking please don't fail me
Without your love, without your love
I'm just thinkin' please don't fail me
without your love
I'm not gonna to make you
Tell me your lonely, well I'm waitin' outside
I've never meant to put you there
But I promise that I'll try
You tell me your lonely, I'm waiting outside
I never meant to put you there
I never meant to put you there
I'm just thinking please don't fail me
Without your love, without your love
(can someone help finish this ending....i tried but i cannot figure it out)...thanks collin -cwith5 December 1, 2004
I want to make sure it's clear just how big and how loyal of an O.A.R. fan I truly am, simply so that this review doesn't come across as sheer criticism. However, I regret to inform that this show could be considered nothing short of a disappointment. Please allow me to explain.
I am aware that there is little the band can do to control who exactly makes up their fan base, but I was under the impression that it was comprised primarily of at least college aged listeners. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with young people. As a matter of fact, I am a young high school teacher. As a result, I'm likely to have a higher tolerance for adolescent behavior than that of your average citizen. However, what I experienced last weekend was about three thousand drunken 15-17 year olds making out with one another and falling all over themselves, as well as others who were trying to enjoy the show. It was hard to believe that while listening to the music that normally makes me so happy and serene, I felt such rage and anger. One of these kids actually tried to pick a fight with me. A fight, at an O.A.R. show, are you kidding me? I doubted that this guy or any of his friends had ever even listened to Marc's lyrics. Why was he even there if not just to get drunk with his friends? I hope that this is no indication of the direction that the band is headed.
I can't explain how frustrating it was. There I was, listening to the songs I knew and loved, and yet it was almost as if they were playing faintly in the background. I found myself unable to enjoy the music.
In addition, there appeared to be something wrong with the sound system. It's difficult to describe but for lack of a better word it sounded very choppy. I can't imagine that this was a fault in the acoustics of the venue. The Hammerstein Ballroom is a well renowned concert hall famous for it's quality. I know not everyone heard it and thats good, but it's not like it was subtle by any means. In fact, it was impossible to ignore. I don't think I'm out of line in insisting that the audience deserves to enjoy professional sound quality when they've paid good money for the show. Again, I was rendered unable to enjoy the music that I had looked forward to for so long.
I fear that this review comes across as one big complaint, and that is not the case. I did walk away from that concert disappointed, but I did not tell myself that it would be my last O.A.R. show. On the contrary, I told myself that the next one would be better. I do want to continue to see the band perform, but I do not want to find myself in a situation similar to last Friday ever again. This was my second of two shows and the first (8/8/04) blew this one away. -richfry13 December 3, 2004
The show was overall good, but Marc didn't really talk to the crowd which was disappointing. The second nights setlist was much better, I feel like I missed out. Next year Im defintley going to both nights. Anyone know if they are planning add NY to their spring tour. -gvp19 January 25, 2005
This was my first O.A.R. show, i had a great time. I agree with GVP19 about the lack of talking from Marc, and yea the 27ths setlist was a little better but i dont really feel like i missed out.
